Stay tuned for Episode 7 - Beth's 21st, Elvie's wedding.

I attended the Ashfield Primary School (Western Australia) from 1957 to 1963, school years 1-7. I was an average student, but well below average in spelling and arithmatic. Below is my year 7 report that did not bode well to enter High School...

Have an awesome day! Cheers, Max.

As a young child, I was not aware of what the family was going through, being the youngest child. Going to school was my problem - it got in the way of my fun time, but it did have one good activity. Playtime! Football in the winter and cricket in the summer.

I would get up around 5.30-6 am, when my dad left for the bush in his work of cutting firewood, have breakfast and head off on my one and a half kilometre walk to school. It got pretty cold in my shorts. I'd get to school around 6.30-7am, and be the first one there. Two hours of kick to kick on the oval, then the bell would go.

Three hours to lunchtime and an hour of play, then the afternoon would drag till 3.30pm. I would race home to watch Superman on TV, grab a Vegemite sandwich and head out the door. I had to be home by dark. My mother had no idea were I was or what I got up to, and there were a lot of places boys should not be, as we lived in an semi-industrial area not big on security. More about this later.
Irene & Gordon, my parents.
Irene, with daughters Beth & Elvie.
Max (me) aged 6 & Graeme aged 9. And maybe a cousin?
My cousin, Keith, with our house in the background.
Beth was bridesmaid (on the left) to cousin Maureen, Keith's sister.
Gordon, my father.
Two of my mothers sisters, Daphne & Grace, with their mother, Sarah, at Granma's house in West Midland.
Mum and Dad at a wedding.
A night out in Perth - a cousin, and Elvie & Beth, my sisters.
Elvie.
Beth.
Beth & Elvie joined the British Paints Marching Girls Team.
Marching Girls played a big role at the opening cerimony of the Western Australia Commonwelth Games at that time.
This is the Greylands Greyhounds Team. Beth is at the back far left, & Elvie, at the back in the middle.
Elvie finds a steady boyfriend in Phil, pictured in Hay Street, Perth.
Elvie's turn to be bridesmaid for another cousin.
Gordon & Irene at another family wedding.
Elvie and Phil get more serious, pictured around our house on Guildford Road, Bayswater, Western Australia.
Phil's family were in the horse racing industry, across the Swan River at Ascot. He also had a nice car.
Elvie.
Gordon, my father, was a member of the Swan Districts Football Club, and all our family joined in listening to their games each Saturday. The local games were always packed with fans. This was before the national competition (AFL) destroyed the local games (WAFL).

I played in the under 14s team for Ashfield as ruck and full-forward.
Elvie and Phil get engaged.
My parents are probably thinking they can get a bedroom back, but not so.

After their marriage, Phil moves in so they can save money for their first home.

I was still at Primary School at this time, and cannot remember much of this era.
The kids are getting older, and Mum and Dad start showing the strains of a hard life on their face.
